This is a fine and very decorative painting by a rare artist and a follower of Willem van de Velde the younger. Contemporary with Peter Monamy, most of his work dates around 1720.
His paintings have a finished glossy quality, and one distinctive feature is his tendency to exaggerate the sparring of his ships, particularly the length of the yards.
Very little biographical detail exists to shed any light on the life and work of this early eighteenth-century painter sadly, he has produced some exceedingly good paintings, and we have been fortunate to own several over the years.
He is illustrated in “Dictionary of Sea Painters” by E.H.H. Archibald, Plate 201.
