Artist Profile

William Anslow Thornley RBA

Fl. 1858 – 1898

He was undoubtedly a prolific artist as the number of his London exhibits shows (205), though his work is extremely popular especially in recent years.

At his best his work is exceptionally fine and professional, as these delicate paintings would attest to. He showed his work at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, Suffolk Street Galleries and various other notable societies.

Thornley lived mainly in London and Hastings between 1858 and 1898. He painted a large number of paintings on the east and south coasts. His favourite painting time seems to have been sunset and dawn and scenes by him in the full light of day are fewer. Although his work is frequently seen and widely admired, very little if anything is known about the man himself, particularly why he adopted so many pseudonyms.
